Am I good?

Boy am I good! I predicted a Conservative minority government, and it happened! I knew that while Canadians might’ve been annoyed with the Liberals and their excessive spending, they weren’t quite ready for an ultra-right wing government to be in full power. So now Harper et al get a trial run, a try-out to see if we like him and what he does. It’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds, because he’ll have to be nice to Jack Layton & the NDP in order to get anything done. That’s good for us plebes, as that helps keep Harper in check. While I don’t always agree with Jack & the NDP, I know that he’ll stop Harper from doing anything too crazy.

Now let’s see how long it is until Harper breaks his first promise. ;-)

It’s been a while

I just realized that I haven’t done a post since before Christmas, so it’s time I do one for the new year. It’s election day here in Canada, and I for one, am glad. I’m sick of hearing about polls, what the politicians are gonna do for me and I’m especially sick of seeing the signs in people’s lawns everywhere. It’ll be nice once it’s done. Of course I will be sad if Stephen Harper wins a majority, because he frightens me in a right-wing-George-W kind of way. I generally don’t have a problem with most of the parties in Canada, but Stephen Harper is just a little too right wing for my tastes. I get scared when he says he’s going to remove the Not Withstanding Clause from the Constitution, or when he says that a women should not have the choice to have an abortion. While I don’t agree with abortions for women who just forgot about birth control one night, I don’t think abortion should be banned entirely. What if a woman is raped and ends up pregnant? Should she be forced to have the child? I think in this situation she should be allowed to decide. The woman who forgot that the condom goes on before sex and ends up pregnant shouldn’t be allowed to have one. But that’s just my opinion. Removing the Not Withstanding Clause is just plain silly. I mean, to remove a legitimate way for a politician to oppose a bill is just wrong. I could see removing it if it was used frivolously, however in all the cases I can think of, it was used judiciously, and in the spirit in which it was written. If Stephen Harper gets rid of it, he’s removing a legitimate avenue of opposition for politicians. He probably just wants to remove it so no one can block any of his crazy ideas, but again, that’s just my opinion.

In the end, all that matters is that you get out and vote. Don’t complain about what happens unless you vote.
