Yes, I’ve finally started knitting up my very first sock, and I must say, it’s going pretty well. I wanted to do a simple, generic sock, so my sister suggested I use the Generic Toe-up sock pattern found on Wendy’s website, which sounded dandy. I’m using the Canadian coloured Regia yarn that’s stripy, so I didn’t think I needed any fancy sock pattern, besides, being my first sock, I didn’t want to get all complicated.

We had to futz around a bit with the cast-on, as we were using Judy’s magic cast-on, and we were both having issues figuring out what was up and what was down, and then what was the tail end & what was the working yarn. After about 15 minutes we sorted it out (turns out my sister & I do things slightly differently, so I couldn’t replicate what she was doing for the cast-on, but had to figure out my own way), and I was off!

Me & Toe cap

I went round and round and round all day today:
Toe cap

until I reached critical mass, i.e., the point where I have to start working on the heel. So I put the sock down and will pick it up again tomorrow when there’s more natural light. Because I’m used to working with larger yarn, I find it easier to knit during the daytime, and since I’m off work right now, I’ll take advantage of that and knit in the afternoons. :-)

I am quite pleased with my progress though, as it’s going well (hope I didn’t just jinx things there! Knowing Murphy & his law, I probably just did, but oh well). So much so that while we were out today at a neat-o yarn store in Picton, I picked up another funky skein of TOFUtsies yarn for another pair of socks (it has shrimp & crab in it! Don’t ask me how that works, all I know is that it’s 2.5% chitin, which is the shrimp/crab part.). And then a really cool skein of KPPP yarn, or something like that, in complimentary colours to some of the yarn I stole from my aunt in Italy. Instead of just doing straight sky-blue socks, they’ll be sky-blue feet with some stipes of funkiness in the leg part. I’m very excited about that.

So there you have it, the new adventures of me and El Primero, as I have dubbed my first sock. I’ll keep you posted on its progress, as well as that of El Segundo, its mate.
