Obsessions in Television

Ah yes, with the end of the shortened television season, I have begun to delve into my cache of tv shows on DVDs. Some of these are part of my collection, while others I have borrowed from friends. Right now I’m watching 24. I started watching the show midway thru season 3, so I needed to catch up. I watched Season 1 a few weeks ago, and just finished off Season 2 tonight. And I must say, I am totally obsessed! Everyone should have a Jack Bauer to call upon whenever life gets rough for them. :-) If you’re looking for some fun and games with Jack, cruise on over to the Random Jack Bauer Fact Generator. It’s absolutely high-larious. Keep refreshing the page to see silly facts about Jack. They’re guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Seeing how this last season got good again, I’m also going to catch up on Lost this summer. I stopped watching midway through Season 2 because the show got, well, boring. The writers would parse out information so bloody slowly and subtly that I tended to watch the show while reading a novel, so I figured I should just stop watching altogether. But then JJ and company decided to make the show interesting again, but at that point I was a bit ‘lost’ on the plot, so I didn’t watch at all. So a friend is lending me seasons 2 and 3, so that I can catch up and be ready in time for season 5 this fall. Of course I’ll have to wait till season 4 comes out on DVD as well so I can be fully caught up, but that’s all right….that’s what PVRs are for.

I’ve also become a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, and the wonderfully zany Neil Patrick Harris. The show is hilarious, but Harris’ Barney is legend - wait for it - ary. :-) If you haven’t caught the show at all, you absolutely must do so. Again, the show’s on season 3, or maybe even 4, so I’ve got some catching up to do. If no one I know has the first few seasons, I’ll be hitting up the library first to see what they’ve got, and then if they don’t have it, I’ll start scouring the video stores.

So there you have it folks, when I’m not at work, when I’m not knitting, when I’m not out jogging or playing tennis, I’ll be home watching lots of tv. Let me know if you want to join me, you’re more than welcome. :-)

Discovering Life Beyond Television

As most of you know, during the television season, I watch a lot tv. I usually have two or more shows to watch each night (except Saturdays, although there’s at least Hockey Night in Canada which includes two hockey games, so I guess that counts as two shows, right? haha.) But there’s been a writer’s strike for the last several months, and before Christmas most of my shows had run out of new episodes to air. Which means I’ve been exploring other ways to entertain myself. To wit:

  • I’ve discovered there are other channels out there in my digital cable package. :-)
  • I’ve started reading more.
  • I’ve started listening to those digital music channels more. Of particular interest is the 80’s channel, especially from 6-9pm, when it’s New Wave music.
  • I’ve played with my Nintendo DS for hours on end.
  • Right now I’m also packing/sorting/organizing as well in preparation for my big move.

And I must say, I thought I would miss my shows, but to be honest, I haven’t. Not at all. Sure, I’m upset when I get a reminder like I did last week, about how 24 was supposed to premiere next week, but I haven’t felt too upset about. Honestly, I tend to get more upset with the lack of shows in the summertime, so forget this dearth of shows.  :-)

Speaking of, I should really get back to some sorting/packing activity. Toodles!

Dexter’s the Man

Oh Dexter, you’ve really gotten yourself in a pickle now. If you don’t watch the wonderful Showtime (or is it HBO? I always forget) show Dexter, then you’re really missing out. I highly recommend it. Season 1 was based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, and now Season 2 is all the creation of the the show’s writers. If they were going to fail, it would be on Season 2. But they have not failed, in fact, they’ve excelled! Season 2 is as good as Season 1, and has me glued to the set every Sunday night. So if you’re not watching it, you should be.

Annoyances with Television Are Annoying

Tonight was television catch up night at my house, as I was out for the last two evenings, so I had plenty to watch. Of course with the Hollywood writer’s strike going on right now I probably shouldn’t rattle through my recorded shows so fast, because I may have to stretch them out for a while. At a bare minimum I wanted to catch up on my soap, because it’s more fun to watch than read the recaps online.

I had three episodes of General Hospital to catch up on, but since they’re doing one of those “let’s show you an entire evening in one hour increments” storyline right now that’s been going on for the last 2 and a half weeks, I almost decided to skip Monday’s and Tuesday’s episodes. I figured today’s would be enough. Well, was I wrong!

I started with Wednesday, and realized I missed a couple of things. So I stopped the recording and went back to Tuesday’s episode. After 5 minutes I realized I missed another couple of things, so I stopped it and started Monday’s. So my attempt at saving some time was for naught.

And am I glad I went back, because it appears they’re killing off one of my favourite characters! I wouldn’t have normally thought anything about it, however I know the actress that plays her has been subject of rumours for the last few months, as it took a while to renegotiate her contract, then it looked like the producers weren’t sure what to do with her, etc. But it finally appeared she was getting more of a storyline over the last month or so, so I was pleased. Until today! I happened to catch a glimpse of the cover of Soap Opera Digest, and there it was in black & white: Why GH Had to Kill Emily. I was pissed.  So naturally I am utterly peeved to see the cliff-hanger for today’s episode, although I am a little surprised to see it wasn’t a Friday episode where this happened, seeing as that’s the usual MO for soaps. But I guess given the way the storyline has been going so far, it’ll take till Friday before everyone’s realized that 1-Emily is dead, and that 2-it appears her fiance Nicholas did the deed!

I think I may just have to stop watching the show now. First they kill off Alan earlier this year, then they bring Laura back only to have her leave again. They teased us with the return of Dr. Noah Drake (aka Rick Springfield), as well as Anna Devane, and Robert Scorpio, and now this??? I mean, that’s two major characters killed off in one year!  Ugh, I’m pissed. Yes, I said it once, or maybe even twice already, so I’ll say it for the fourth, fifth and possibly sixth times, I’m pissed!

And before you say it, yes, I do take my shows seriously, but come on, that’s why their fun! Life can be complicated sometimes, it’s nice to get involved in other people’s issues and forget about yours.

Speaking of that, I saw a preview for the new Battlestar Galactica mini-series, Razor, which premieres on Nov. 24. Man, it looks good! Can’t wait to see it!
