Obsessions in Television
Ah yes, with the end of the shortened television season, I have begun to delve into my cache of tv shows on DVDs. Some of these are part of my collection, while others I have borrowed from friends. Right now I’m watching 24. I started watching the show midway thru season 3, so I needed to catch up. I watched Season 1 a few weeks ago, and just finished off Season 2 tonight. And I must say, I am totally obsessed! Everyone should have a Jack Bauer to call upon whenever life gets rough for them.
If you’re looking for some fun and games with Jack, cruise on over to the Random Jack Bauer Fact Generator. It’s absolutely high-larious. Keep refreshing the page to see silly facts about Jack. They’re guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Seeing how this last season got good again, I’m also going to catch up on Lost this summer. I stopped watching midway through Season 2 because the show got, well, boring. The writers would parse out information so bloody slowly and subtly that I tended to watch the show while reading a novel, so I figured I should just stop watching altogether. But then JJ and company decided to make the show interesting again, but at that point I was a bit ‘lost’ on the plot, so I didn’t watch at all. So a friend is lending me seasons 2 and 3, so that I can catch up and be ready in time for season 5 this fall. Of course I’ll have to wait till season 4 comes out on DVD as well so I can be fully caught up, but that’s all right….that’s what PVRs are for.
I’ve also become a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, and the wonderfully zany Neil Patrick Harris. The show is hilarious, but Harris’ Barney is legend - wait for it - ary.
If you haven’t caught the show at all, you absolutely must do so. Again, the show’s on season 3, or maybe even 4, so I’ve got some catching up to do. If no one I know has the first few seasons, I’ll be hitting up the library first to see what they’ve got, and then if they don’t have it, I’ll start scouring the video stores.
So there you have it folks, when I’m not at work, when I’m not knitting, when I’m not out jogging or playing tennis, I’ll be home watching lots of tv. Let me know if you want to join me, you’re more than welcome. ![]()

NHL Playoff Fun: Celebrity Blogs
In an effort to get more people in the US talking about hockey, the NHL has got celebrity bloggers on their site who talk about whatever they want, as long as it’s hockey-related.
I like this idea because it gets us a look at the “real life” of the celebrity, because they are, after all, just real people too. But it’s fun to hear them talk about their favourite team, or the game they just watched. Lots of fun. Without further ado, I give you a list of some of them for this season:
- Tom Cavanaugh: You know him as the loveable dude Ed from the show of the same name, but we Canadians will remember him from those Labatt beer ads from many, many years ago. I love it that he still cheers for his hometown Habs, and also because he’s a cutie.
But I digress for a moment. Tom is a Habs fan, how cool is that? And he talks about having a Richard jersey, and even the wonderful poem by Roch Carrier that we all had to read about, The Hockey Sweater. - Jay Baruchel: That cutie loveable geek from Knocked Up and Freeks & Geeks, Jay is also a Habs fan. Who knew there were so many down in La-La land?
- Eddie Cahill: Currently on CSI: NY, I remember Eddie from his time on Friends, and as Carrie’s bi-sexual boyfriend on Sex & the City. But he’s also a hockey fan, which is awesome! His team is the Rangers, which I’ll forgive him for, since he’s from NYC.
- Thorsten Kaye: Thorsten first caught my eye on One Life to Live, playing the dreamy Irish dude whose name I completely forget. Thorsten was born in Germany, but raised in the US, and ever since he moved there, he got hooked on hockey. He was hooked on the Wings in the 90’s when he lived there during grad school. So he’s got the bug and even tries to sneak in the Red Wings logo into his scenes on All My Children! Talk about funny. Kind of like Matthew Perry sneaking in a Toronto Blue Jays cap into scenes while he was on Friends.
There are a few other celebrities blogging this year too, but I haven’t listed them all since I figure you could go there and find them yourself. But I like the fact that the NHL is trying to be progressive and trying to get Americans to get excited about hockey. Here in Canada it’s not a problem to get ratings, to get people to buy jerseys, and show their support for their team. But in the US, it’s a bigger challenge. For a professional sports league that isn’t on the radar of most sports fans, that’s a big issue.

Discovering Life Beyond Television
As most of you know, during the television season, I watch a lot tv. I usually have two or more shows to watch each night (except Saturdays, although there’s at least Hockey Night in Canada which includes two hockey games, so I guess that counts as two shows, right? haha.) But there’s been a writer’s strike for the last several months, and before Christmas most of my shows had run out of new episodes to air. Which means I’ve been exploring other ways to entertain myself. To wit:
- I’ve discovered there are other channels out there in my digital cable package.
- I’ve started reading more.
- I’ve started listening to those digital music channels more. Of particular interest is the 80’s channel, especially from 6-9pm, when it’s New Wave music.
- I’ve played with my Nintendo DS for hours on end.
- Right now I’m also packing/sorting/organizing as well in preparation for my big move.
And I must say, I thought I would miss my shows, but to be honest, I haven’t. Not at all. Sure, I’m upset when I get a reminder like I did last week, about how 24 was supposed to premiere next week, but I haven’t felt too upset about. Honestly, I tend to get more upset with the lack of shows in the summertime, so forget this dearth of shows.
Speaking of, I should really get back to some sorting/packing activity. Toodles!
